Building with Eco-friendly Cedar Wood

21/05/17

We care about the environment more than most – after all, trees are our livelihood. We source all our cedar wood from trusted FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certified sources. Every piece of cedar wood fitted onto your summer house will be sustainably sourced and quality tested before it is measured and installed by our team. The FSC aims to create responsible management of forests worldwide, but it doesn’t stop there. As garden room builders we play our part to enable regeneration and replacement of the worlds forests and trees. We do so by choosing suppliers who respect and buy into the Forestry Commission’s statement.

Our appreciation for the FSC’s ethos doesn’t end there. Each and every member of our team has a love of wildlife. Some of us fish, some bird watch, some volunteer at local RSPB reserves. Our cedar wood is sourced from forests that have large parts dedicated to wildlife and conservation. This means we can build our beautiful products with the peace of mind that our beloved wildlife is being preserved.

Cedar wood life cycle

Wood, when used in building materials is actually more beneficial than its man made counterpart. It has the lowest energy consumption and the lowest CO2 emission. When we build with cedar wood, we are unlocking the stored solar energy and putting it to use in cedars thermal properties, ultimately creating a negative CO2 emission value. Put simply though, the more wood used, the more wood has to be generated in forests, the more forests take priority.

While this is, of course, a huge benefit for the environment it is also a benefit for our customers. Not only will you reap the rewards of having a Cedar Garden Room, you’ll also notice how durable and wearing cedar wood is. Western Red Cedar, sourced from North Canada ages beautifully and serves to keep you warm and dry. It’s our talented team of garden room builders who ensure that all aspects of the finished product are built to last, so that your investment will continue to give back for years to come.

On-site impact

By working carefully or if necessary, with landscape gardeners, we leave your garden looking clean and tidy. The finished garden room or home office integrates into the surrounding scenery so that you’ll be using it as if it had been there all along. By building onsite from the ground up, we ensure minimal damage to your existing site because we negate the need for heavy machinery. We work with our hands, as we have done for many years, so the construction of your garden room has little impact on the existing site.

As an additional environmentally friendly option, we can install a sedum roof onto your cedar garden room. These are living roofs, based on a plant called ‘sedum’ so the finished building will be an extension of your garden. We love that more and more of our customers are choosing to have a  sedum roof fitted. Not only do they add even more green to your garden, they also create a microhabitat so the wildlife cycle can continue.
